Manchester Climate Change Agency | In Our Nature – Reports
Manchester Climate Change Agency leads the city’s response to the climate emergency, working with communities, businesses and partners to create a zero-carbon and climate resilient Manchester.
Through programmes such as In Our Nature, the agency supports local projects that reduce emissions, protect nature and empower residents to take climate action in their neighbourhoods.
The brief and objectives
As part of our work with In Our Nature and MCCA, we were asked to create a series of visually engaging reports that highlight and celebrate their outstanding achievements and impact across Manchester.
The objectives were to:
- communicate climate impact in a clear and accessible way
- showcase the community groups and projects driving change across the city
- present complex data visually so it is easy to understand and share
- ensure all materials were engaging, inclusive and on brand
Our insight and creative approach
We worked closely with the In Our Nature team to shape and develop each report, ensuring the content truly reflected their impact and ambitions. Together, we explored a range of design solutions to present data and insights in the clearest and most engaging way possible — from how figures were displayed to how maps and graphics brought stories to life.
Accessibility was a key consideration throughout, ensuring every report could be easily read, understood and enjoyed by all audiences.
Progress report
A key piece of work developed with In Our Nature was the Progress Report. As a multi-year project, it was important to provide regular, visual updates showcasing the community groups involved and the positive impact they’re making.
Building on the existing In Our Nature creative style, we designed bespoke pages to make the content clear, engaging, and easy to digest. Key sections offered an at-a-glance overview of progress to date, highlighting the types of projects supported and how In Our Nature is empowering people and communities across Manchester.
The report helped bring to life the real impact of the initiative — for example, showing that the scheme had saved over 18.5 tonnes of CO₂, equivalent to driving around the Earth twice in a petrol car. By presenting data in relatable, visual ways, we aimed to make the information more accessible, memorable, and meaningful for readers.
Carbon footprint report
Another key element of In Our Nature involved monitoring and engaging with Manchester’s wards to track their carbon footprints. In partnership with the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research, Manchester Climate Change Agency collected data on each ward’s performance.
Working closely with In Our Nature, we designed an easy-to-understand, interactive PDF providing a clear overview of Manchester’s overall performance, with a deeper look at each ward — comparing progress against the city average and the 2038 zero-carbon vision.
A central feature was the Manchester ward map, offering a snapshot of emissions levels and local projects. Using a simple traffic-light system, we helped readers quickly identify which wards had lower, average or higher emissions.
To keep the content engaging and accessible, we used a friendly illustration style featuring recognisable Manchester landmarks, maintaining consistency with the wider In Our Nature identity. Each ward also had its own page summarising performance, areas for improvement and active community projects, alongside a comparison table showing which wards were on track to meet the city’s targets.
Results and impact
The In Our Nature team were delighted with the results, sharing the reports as examples of their ongoing work across Greater Manchester. The reports have helped them communicate progress more clearly, celebrate local climate action and engage residents, partners and stakeholders in the journey toward a zero-carbon city.
